Today, Liverpool Delhi Supporters' Club - Delhi Kop is proud to announce that we'll be distributing official HJC shirts to the winners of some of our competitions. As far as LDSC is concerned, it's a matter of great pride and feeling of satisfaction to be associated with such a worthy cause.
Hillsborough happened 22 years ago when some officials failed to anticipate the consequences and opened the gates of the Leppings Lane end of the Hillsborough stadium on 15th April 1989. What followed was massive overcrowding in the stands resulting in the unfortunate deaths of 96 Liverpool FC supporters. While that served as an eye opener to English FA and football clubs and helped introduced systems like 'full-seating' stadia, the actual reasons for the disaster were never established. Even though the wide spread common knowledge is that the fault was with the authorities, the people in-charge have failed to act upon it and punish those responsible. Apart from those dead, the disaster left the families as well as severely traumatized. This article by Tony Evans serves more than narrating how the survivors feel till this date. If you'd like to know more about how a family feels about such a disaster and the actions thereof, here is a good read.
To make matters worse, a disgusting, deluded editor of a newspaper (tabloid) called The Sun published a few days later that Liverpool fans were stealing from the dead (while they were looking for the wallets for IDs), urinating on policemen etc. What followed was the biggest boycott of any newspaper in the history. 'Don't Buy The Sun' is something that resonates worldwide and unites the Liverpool fans as well as the fans of other football clubs.
We, the fans in India, have always been away from such tragedies. Our own tragedies have had far worse body counts. But the apathy towards the dead and the lack of justice is something that's appalling by any standard. LDSC fully supports the cause of justice and would like to do whatever is humanly possible for the cause.
As a first step, Delhi Kop has decided that the prized we give out for our competitions thru the year would mostly comprise of HJC merchandize. This, we thought, is the minimum we could do for such a worthy cause. As a special gesture to the supporters of Liverpool Football Club as well as those who support the Hillsborough Justice Campaign in Delhi area, Debi McMillan, the face of HJC, has agreed to personally sign each and every shirt or scarf or any other item for us. This sign of gratitude would be on the shirts that are given as a prize for the competitions as well as if you wish to purchase them independently. If some of you guys wish that we should bulk order them, please do let us know on reds@delhikop.com with the subject 'HJC order request'.
We'vedesired, craved for the 19th for 21 years and now that Kenny is here we can hope it would come to us sooner than later. I personally desire Justice For The 96 more than the 19th.
YNWA you 96 angels!
